Updates on Tax Legislation, School Choice Amendment and Budget Conference Committee

The Senate approved their version of tax reform legislation that swaps sales tax for property tax. This proposal, which calls for a one-half cent sales tax to eliminate one portion of owner-occupied property taxes, would exempt food sales and accommodations. The Senate also will address the House version of property tax relief in the near future.

The House narrowly defeated a school choice amendment offered by Rep. Tracy Edge. The school choice debate will likely come back again next session.

A budget conference committee could soon be named. With so many Grand Strand items in the state’s budget, that committee can help our area immensely. Stay Tuned!

Thumbs Up to Sen. Dick Elliott for pushing hard to exempt lodging from the Senate sales tax proposal.
